The Spirit Remains

Director: Brian Francis, Mélanie Line Richard / Description: Fifty years after the expropriation of Kouchibouguac National Park, The Spirit Remains follows the affected families in their healing journeys. Formerly living to the rhythm of the seasons, the tides and the weather like their first ancestors did, these Acadian people had to adapt to a new lifestyle, to the gaze of neighboring communities and to an expropriated status. A story of human resilience, connection to nature and the relationship with the Indigenous Mi'kmaq people.

GATEWAY
Director: Dana Richie / Description: GATEWAY is a film thoughtfully told through the eyes and hearts of everyday American families who were introduced to opioids after surgery and go on to battle with addiction – either personally or as a caregiver to a loved one. The result is a humanizing and eye-opening look into the risks of injudicious opioid prescribing in an often overlooked setting in the context of the addiction crisis: the operating room. The film features a woman who faced addiction following a C-section, a high school athlete who struggled with opioids after suffering sports-related injuries, a young woman who has battled addiction for over a decade, and a clinician who has made it his mission to reduce opioid prescribing after surgery.
